New Mexico Representative will be 54 th Secretary of the Department of Interior
Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland as 54th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
“Ducks Unlimited and the Department of Interior have a lengthy history of working together to conserve waterfowl habitat and expand outdoor recreation opportunities for America’s hunters and outdoor enthusiasts,” said Ducks Unlimited CEO Adam Putnam. “During her time in Congress, Rep. Haaland has been an outspoken supporter of DU’s biggest conservation priorities, such as NAWCA. We look forward to continuing our work with Interior to prioritize important and effective programs, like the Federal Duck Stamp, and to further our shared habitat conservation partnerships.”
Upon swearing in, Secretary Haaland will serve as the Chair of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, which oversees all NAWCA and duck stamp funds. She’ll also be in charge of the National Wildlife Refuge System and all permanent voluntary wetland and grassland easements. Additionally, the Department of Interior’s U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and National Bird Banding Lab are important partners in tracking migration patterns for waterfowl in North America.
